Summer Afternoon
18"x24"x.75"
This is what a pond looks like when nobody's in a hurry.
Three koi drift through their separate corners of the water — no particular destination, no particular urgency. A cool shadow falls diagonally across the canvas, dividing the warmth of the surface light from the quieter depth beneath it. The fish don't seem to notice. They rarely do.
Summer Afternoon is the most purely relaxed painting in the series. The kind you hang somewhere you sit often, and find yourself staring at without meaning to.
SERIES NOTE
There's something about watching koi that changes your breathing.
This series began as an exploration of light on water — dappled, shifting, warm in some places and cool in others. The koi are almost incidental. They move through the water the way a good summer afternoon moves — unhurried, alive, completely unbothered. People who see these paintings in person tend to say the same thing: these speak to me. I think I know why. Some paintings ask you to look at them. These invite you to stay awhile.
Each piece is an original abstract in acrylics painted with loose, energetic mark-making that captures movement without containing it.
