Something is happening just below the surface.

A shaft of light cuts diagonally across the pond — the kind that finds its way through branches overhead and lands on the water restlessly. In that bright patch, a large koi swishes into position, its movement disturbing the surface just enough to create a halo of caught light around its body, while two smaller fish feed nearby.

It's a small moment that happens all the time, if you're willing to sit still long enough to see it. I've loved watching the fish move and the light sparkle since I was a child. I could do it for hours. These paintings are what it feels like to sit there, lost in time.

At 12x12, Between Shadows has an intimacy that the larger pieces don't — it pulls you close rather than commanding the room. The kind of painting that rewards the wall you pass most often.

SERIES NOTE

There's something about watching koi that changes your breathing.

This series began as an exploration of light on water — dappled, shifting, warm in some places and cool in others. The koi are almost incidental. They move through the water the way a good summer afternoon moves — unhurried, alive, completely unbothered. People who see these paintings in person tend to say the same thing: these speak to me. I think I know why. Some paintings ask you to look at them. These invite you to stay awhile.
